Death toll from protests in France's New Caledonia rises to 7 - Reports

Paris, May 24 (UNI) One more person has been killed in the ongoing protests against planned electoral reform in the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia, bringing the total death toll up to seven, French broadcaster BFMTV reported on Friday, citing the prosecutor's office in the island's capital of Noumea.
The 48-year-old man was shot dead by the police as a group of 15 people attacked a police patrol during an inspection of one of the city's communities, the report said.
The prosecutor's office launched an investigation into an "intentional killing by a person in public authority," with the police officer who shot the man detained, the broadcaster reported.
