Assam push back 18 Bangladeshi nationals from Cachar and Sribhumi Distts

Guwahati, July 5 (UNI) The Assam government today pushed back 18 Bangladeshi nationals from Cachar and Sribhumi districts.
Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, "Oh, look, who's going back to their home? In Assam, we welcome guests with open arms, but those trying to illegally prolong their stay are treated with the special gesture of PUSHBACK. 18 illegal Bangladeshis were pushed back today in the wee hours from Cachar and Sribhumi."
Sarma shared this on his X handle with a photograph of the pushed-back Bangladeshi nationals.
It may be mentioned here that Assam had intensified its drive against the illegal foreigners in the last month and so far pushed back over 300 Bangladeshi nationals.
It may be mentioned here that the Assam Chief Minister has recently informed the Assam Legislative Assembly that the state government has decided to bring back the Illegal (Expulsion from Assam) Act 1950 back into enforcement.
"Under the Illegal Expulsion Act 1950, the District Commissioner, if he is reasonably convinced that a certain individual is a foreigner, can remove that individual without referring the case to the Tribunal," he said.
The Chief Minister said that the government has taken inspiration from former Chief Minister Bimala Prasad Chaliha, who had pushed back illegal immigrants. “We are taking inspiration from the good works of the Congress,” he said while referring to Chaliha, who was a Congress Chief Minister.
