Telangana CM makes statement on caste survey 2024 report in Assembly

Hyderabad, Feb 4 (UNI) Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy made a statement on the Social, Economic, Employment, Education, Political, and Caste Survey 2024 report in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.

In his statement, the Chief Minister mentioned that the report was compiled following a decision made by the Council of Ministers on February 4, 2024, to formulate and implement policies focused on the welfare and development of Backward Classes (BCs), Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs), and other weaker sections in the state.

The Telangana Legislative Assembly, on February 16, 2024, unanimously resolved to conduct a comprehensive household survey that would include social, economic, educational, employment, political, and caste data.

This decision was formalized through G.O.M.S. No. 18, dated October 10, 2024. A committee, chaired by Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy, was appointed to supervise the survey. The Planning Department was designated as the nodal agency for the execution of this large-scale initiative.

A study of similar surveys conducted in states like Karnataka and Bihar was undertaken to incorporate best practices into the survey design. Input from public associations, sociologists, intellectuals, and stakeholders helped shape the framework for the survey. The survey included 57 questions covering 75 fields to gather detailed socio-economic and demographic data.

The state was divided into 94,261 Enumeration Blocks (EBs), each covering 150 households, and a total of 1,03,889 enumerators and supervisors were appointed to ensure meticulous data collection across both rural and urban areas. The survey was carried out in two phases: the first phase (house listing) was conducted from November 6–8, 2024, and the second phase (actual survey) ran from November 9–December 25, 2024. Data entry took place from November 20–December 25, 2024.

The survey successfully covered a total of 1,12,15,134 households, representing 96.9 percent of the total 1,15,71,457 households in Telangana. 3,56,323 households were left unsurveyed, mainly in urban areas such as GHMC (Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation).

The survey recorded a total population of 3,54,77,554 individuals in the state. The caste-wise breakdown includes: Scheduled Castes (SCs), comprising 61,84,319 people (17.43 percent of the total); Scheduled Tribes (STs) with 37,05,929 individuals (10.45 percent); Backward Classes (BCs), excluding Muslims, with 1,64,09,179 people (46.25 percent); Muslim Minorities, numbering 44,57,012 (12.56 percent); Other Castes (OCs), excluding Muslim minorities, totalling 47,21,115 (13.31 percent); and the total OCs, including Muslims, which amount to 56,01,539 (15.79 percent).

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy emphasised that the data gathered through this comprehensive household survey will play a vital role in shaping policies for marginalized and disadvantaged communities in the state.

He reassured that the government remains committed to transparency and social justice, and the findings will be utilized to create inclusive policies that focus on economic growth and equitable representation for all sections of society.
