Mizoram police prepare for new laws replacing British-era penal code

Aizawl, June 19 (UNI) Mizoram police are gearing up to implement three new major criminal laws to replace the longstanding British-era Indian Penal Code (IPC) starting July 1.
The new laws, namely Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), are poised to bring substantial changes across India's legal landscape.
Under the new regulations, the BNS will replace the IPC 1860, while the BNSS will supersede the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) 1973, and the BSA will update the Indian Evidence Act 1872. The BNS alone introduces 358 sections, with enhancements such as increased sentences for 33 crimes and the introduction of community service penalties for six offenses.
