Karnataka Guv clears law to regulate Amazon, BigBasket in agri trade

Bengaluru, Mar 25 (UNI) Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Tuesday granted assent to the Karnataka Agricultural Produce Marketing (Regulation and Development) (Amendment) Act, 2025, bringing e-commerce platforms under agricultural marketing regulations.
The law mandates platforms such as Amazon, BigBasket, D-Mart, and Udaan to comply with state agricultural laws. Violators face penalties, including imprisonment of up to six months, a fine of Rs 1 lakh, or both.
The bill defines e-commerce platforms as online mediums enabling licensed traders to sell market fee-paid agricultural produce to licensed retail traders in designated market areas. It also allows farmers to make electronic payments.
