Karnataka BJP urges Governor to stall GBA Act

Bengaluru, Mar 19 (UNI) Karnataka BJP leaders on Wednesday urged Governor Thawarchand Gehlot to halt the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) Act, calling it unconstitutional and a violation of the 74th Constitutional Amendment.
A delegation led by Leader of Opposition R. Ashok, LoP in the Legislative Council Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, and state BJP president B.Y. Vijayendra submitted a memorandum highlighting concerns over the legislation, which proposes seven municipal corporations under a single governing body. The BJP contended that the Act disrupts the three-tier governance system and centralises power, weakening local self-governance.
The BJP accused the Congress government of delaying urban local body elections by retaining control over delimitation and reservation decisions—functions meant for the State Election Commission (SEC). The party also criticised the bill for bypassing the Metropolitan Planning Committee (MPC), which should oversee city planning instead of the proposed GBA.
