Justice Manmohan appointed as Supreme Court Judge

New Delhi, Dec 3 (UNI) The Central Government has appointed Justice Manmohan, the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, as a judge of the Supreme Court.
The announcement was made on Tuesday by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal through a post on X (formerly Twitter).
The notification stated that the President of India, after consulting with the Chief Justice of India, had approved Justice Manmohan’s appointment under the powers conferred by the Constitution.
Justice Manmohan’s elevation follows the recommendation made by the Supreme Court Collegium on November 28.
The Collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, included Justice BR Gavai, Justice Surya Kant, Justice Hrishikesh Roy, and Justice Abhay S Oka.
This decision is seen as part of ongoing efforts to fill vacancies in the Supreme Court, which is currently operating below its full sanctioned strength of 34 judges.
Justice Manmohan has had a distinguished judicial career. He was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court on March 13, 2008, and became a permanent judge on December 17, 2009.
In September 2023, he was named Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court and was subsequently elevated to Chief Justice in September 2024.
Before his judicial career, he practiced law extensively before the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court, having enrolled as an advocate in 1987.
He was designated a Senior Advocate by the Delhi High Court in January 2003.
Born on December 17, 1962, Justice Manmohan completed his law degree from Delhi University’s Campus Law Centre in 1987.
His professional journey has been marked by significant contributions to the judiciary and legal profession.
With his appointment, the Supreme Court will now have 33 judges, leaving one vacancy in its sanctioned strength.
Justice Vibhu Bakhru has been appointed as the Acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court following Justice Manmohan’s elevation.
Justice Manmohan’s extensive experience and leadership in the judiciary are expected to bring valuable insights and expertise to the country’s highest court.
The Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA) has organised a farewell party on December 4, 12.15 pm to celebrate the alleviation of Justice Manmohan to the Supreme Court of India.
