Shimla, Dec 9 (UNI) After months of dry weather, Himachal Pradesh witnessed a dramatic shift on Sunday as snowfall and rain graced various parts of the state.
The season’s first light snowfall was recorded in popular destinations like Shimla’s Ridge Maidan, Kufri, and Sirmaur’s Churdhar, among others.
High-altitude regions, including Rohtang Pass, Baralacha, and Kunzum Pass in Lahaul-Spiti, were blanketed with fresh snow, adding to the scenic charm.
The cold wave swept through the state, causing temperatures to plummet sharply.
The maximum temperature dipped by 5 to 6 degrees across Himachal, while the minimum temperature in seven locations approached zero.
On Sunday, Tabo in Lahaul-Spiti recorded the season’s lowest temperature at a bone-chilling -13.1°C.
Other areas, including Narkanda, Manali, and Solan, saw the mercury hovering around the freezing point.
Light drizzle was also reported in parts of Kullu and Bilaspur, enhancing the wintry atmosphere. However, the snowfall led to disruptions in some areas.
The Atal Tunnel and Sissu road turned slippery, causing a traffic jam that stranded around 100 tourists. They were later rescued safely.
Authorities, including Lahaul-Spiti Superintendent of Police Mayank Chaudhary, have urged travellers to stay updated on weather conditions before planning their trips.
Chamba’s tribal regions saw significant snowfall, with Sachhe Jot receiving up to 30 cm of snow. Nearby areas like Hudan Bhatori and Sural Bhatori reported 15 cm, while Bharmour’s Kugati and Mani Mahesh received six cm of snow.
The unexpected change has brought relief to residents and tourists, with the picturesque snowfall rejuvenating the region’s beauty.
However, authorities advise caution as the extreme cold and slippery roads could pose challenges in the coming days.
The Met Office forecast light to moderate rain and snowfall in the afternoon on Monday as the sky would be partly cloudy, but it would be mainly clear by this evening.
The moderately polluted sky is likely to improve air quality in the state after clearing dust and fog; however, the amount of rain and snowfall is not sufficient to provide relief to farmers and apple growers, as the level of moisture is not sufficient in the soil due to a prolonged dry spell.
