Srinagar, June 19 (UNI) An encounter broke out between security forces and militants in Jammu and Kashmir's Sopore sub-district on Wednesday, police said.
The encounter broke out a day ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first trip to Kashmir after being sworn in for the third consecutive time. Modi would arrive in Srinagar on Thursday evening and next morning would lead the Yoga day celebration from Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) on the bank of the iconic Dal Lake.
The gun battle broke out at the Hadipora area of Rafiabad Sopore, when joint teams of forces were carrying out a search operation (CASO) following an input about militant presence.
“The CASO turned into an encounter after the hiding terrorists opened fire at the joint parties of forces which was retaliated,” a security official said. The operation is still underway.
In a social media post on X, Police said forces are on the job.
“Encounter has started at Hadipora area of PD (police district) Sopore. Police and security forces are on the job,” police said.
Earlier, a few educational institutions in the village were closed in Hadipora soon after the CASO launched. UNI MJR SSP
