Amid tourist rush in Manali, cops issue fresh warnings after fatal accidents

Manali/Lahaul-Spiti, April 19 (UNI) With the onset of fresh snowfall in Lahaul-Spiti and the easy access through the Atal Tunnel, thousands of tourists from across the country are rushing to Manali and snow points in nearby regions. However, negligence among visitors continues to pose serious risks, especially near snowbound rivers and dangerous terrains.
In recent days, two tourists died after falling into the icy waters of the Chandra and Bhaga rivers. Authorities said the victims ventured too close to the snow-covered banks, ignoring warnings about the deceptive thin layers of ice that can easily break under pressure.
“The lesson from recent deaths has not been learnt,” a local police officer said. “Despite repeated warnings, tourists, often accompanied by children, move dangerously close to the riverbanks for photographs and snow play, unaware of the lurking dangers beneath the snow sheets,” he said.
